Remarks at the 9/11 Memorial Service

William J. Burns, U.S. Ambassador to Russia

St. Catherine's Church, Moscow, September 11, 2007

Good afternoon. I would like to thank Father Zacchaeus for bringing us together on this sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The victims of September 11 included citizens of more than 90 countries and members of many faiths. As we honor their memory today, let us also take a moment to remember the innocent lives lost in terrorist attacks around the world. We will never forget the pain and outrage we felt after London and Amman, after Bali and Beslan.

Today we have an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to creating a world that is free of terrorism. As Russians and Americans, we know that we have much to gain by working together to confront the threat of terrorism in our world. We have an opportunity to strengthen our resolve to work together and with the international community to create a world free of the injustice, intolerance, and human conflict on which terrorists feed.

We will always remember the lives lost to these senseless acts of terrorism. Let our memories strengthen our resolve to promote peace, security and justice for all of us.

Thank you very much.
