English Language Office Highlights
True Love… for English Teaching in Sochi, Russia
On May 8, Approximately 50 students and 30 instructors at the Sochi Branch of the Moscow-based Russian University of the Friendship of Nations participated in a presentation by English Language Officer David Fay entitled “True Love or Arranged Marriage: How to Teach in a Post-Methods World.” Participants practiced applying key language teaching and learning ingredients, such as critical and creative thinking and group and pair-work, to both a vocabulary and grammar lesson. Authentic materials from the Internet and from the U.S. Embassy-created DVD “American Potpourri” were used to illustrate the importance of using motivating cross-cultural material through which to better teach, and learn, English.
