American Studies Series in Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk

From Wednesday, November 12 to Saturday, November 15, Senior English Language Fellow Vino Reardon and ELO David Fay made a series of presentations in Yekaterinburg at several venues, including the annual “Book Fest” and the well-established Urals State Pedagogical University, after which they traveled to Chelyabinsk to work with the local English language Teachers’ Association. The focus of the presentations was on various aspects of American culture, with an emphasis on teaching culture through language studies. Topics included the ‘public poetry’ movement in the US, how to teach US Elections terminology, and assessment. Chelyabinsk was, until recently, a city ‘closed’ to foreigners due to its military industry and metallurgical factories.
