Students Obamaphoric about Elections

On Tuesday, November 25, a group of 30 students in their 2nd, 4th and 5th year of study in Russian New University’s English Language program explored the application of the literal meanings of electoral terminology to figurative uses. They talked about boyfriends ‘gerrymandering’ their heart and ‘lame duck’ teachers ‘push polling’ the students. The presentation on election words and phrases by ELO David Fay was aimed at finding creative ways to teach specialty vocabulary as well as give students a better feel for the energy surrounding the recent elections in the US. Students asked questions about the outcome and, in an impromptu vote, unanimously supported Obama’s rise to the top executive spot in the US. All expressed hope that this would lead to strong cooperation between the US and Russia.
