What Is a V Visa?

V visas are created to enable spouses and children of legal permanent residents and derivative children of V visa holders to enter the United States as non-immigrants to rejoin their family members and await availability of a visa number or their I-130 petition approval in the United States.

Who Is Eligible to Apply for V visa?

Spouses and children of Legal Permanent Residents are eligible to apply for V1 and V2 visas; derivative children of V1 and V2 visa holders are eligible to apply for V3 visas.

In order to apply for V visas the applicants should meet the following requirements:

1. I-130 Petition for Alien Relative should have been filed with Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services on or before December 21, 2000;

2. The applicant should have been waiting for action on the I-130 petition for at least three years.

How to Apply for V visa?

To establish an applicant’s eligibility for V visa application, the Embassy should be provided with the following information:

  1. applicant’s and derivatives’ full names;
  2. dates and places of birth;
  3. current address including zip code;
  4. NVC case or receipt number;
  5. priority date (the date when the petition was filed);
  6. the applicant’s relationship to the petitioner;
  7. petitioner’s name

What Documents Need to Be Submitted at the Time of Application for V visa?

  1. A valid international passport with a photocopy of the identification page
  2. An original birth certificate with its photocopy and translation into English
  3. Proof of the applicant’s relationship with the petitioner (marriage certificate for spouses and birth certificate for children)
  4. Police certificate in all names as well as all dates of birth ever used. Police certificate must contain references to each place (subject to the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation) in which the applicant lives or has lived for more than six months since attaining the age of . This includes localities where applicants have lived during university studies. If the applicant was on military service, he/she should bring the certificate from the local draft board. If an applicant has lived abroad for more than one year, a police certificate must also be submitted from the country in which he/she lived. Police certificate validity is one year since the date of issuance
  5. Evidence of termination of prior marriage (if applicable), original, photocopy and translation into English
  6. Accompanying child requires a valid passport (or may be included in the parent's passport), a birth certificate and a medical examination. If a child is years of age or over, police certificates are required.
  7. 3 black-and-white or color photos taken against a white or off - white background (5 x 5 sm) for visa
  8. 3 photos of passport size for medical exam
  9. Visa application fee of $100 (or the ruble equivalent) per person, payable at the Embassy on the day of interview
  10. Results of Medical Examination in a sealed envelope
  11. Financial documentation from the petitioner may include but is not limited to employment letter for the petitioner with salary information and/or a copy of tax returns (Form 1040) for the last year, bank statement, W-2s. I-134 Affidavit of Support is not required but may be requested by a consular officer
  12. DHL receipt to confirm the applicant paid for visa delivery. The fee can be paid at one of the DHL offices
  13. Filled out DS-156 и DS-3052 forms ( the forms are mailed by the Embassy in the invitation packet)

V Visas Validity

V1 visa validity is 10 years. V2 and V3 visas are valid for 10 years as well. However, V2 and V3 visas validity can only extend up to the day before the 21-st birthday of a child applicant.
