Teachers to Teachers: Language, Technology, Math, and Science Exchange (LTMS)

The program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, local education departments and Uchitelskaya Gazeta. It is administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS.

This exchange provides opportunities for Russian and U.S. teachers of English, History, Social Studies, Math, Sciences and Information Technologies to learn from one another, compare best practices, and foster excellence in the classroom through sharing of ideas and expertise. The aim of the program is to recognize the success and commitment of secondary school teachers and teacher-trainers in a broad range of subjects by providing U.S. based professional development seminars, practical classroom-learning opportunities, as well as preparation to conduct post-program professional development workshops for colleagues in Russia.

Four-week seminars for EFL, History and Social Studies teachers will take place in the U.S. in the spring of 2008. Sufficient knowledge of English is required to understand lectures and written materials, and to communicate with U.S. counterparts in professional and social settings.
Seminars for Math, Hard Sciences and Information Technologies teachers will take place in the U.S. in the fall of 2008. English language skills are not a requirement.

During an open, merit-based competition, Russian secondary school teachers and teacher-trainers were evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Ability to teach in the field of application;
- Innovation in teaching;
- Awareness and commitment to diversity and pluralism;
- Professionalism
- Leadership.
This year applications were accepted from the following regions of the Russian Federation:

• Nizhniy Novgorod oblast
• Tver oblast
• Moscow oblast (only from Teachers of History and Social Studies)
• Ryazan oblast
• Yaroslavl oblast

U.S. teachers participate in a reciprocal visit to Russia in the autumn of 2009.
