Dr. Frieden and Dr. Onischenko Sign Protocol of Intent.

On April 24, 2012, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Thomas Frieden and Russian Federation Chief Sanitary Officer and Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being head Dr. Gennady Onishenko signed a Protocol of Intent (POI) in Washington, DC. Under the POI, the partners will collaborate on the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

During their meeting, the U.S. and Russian officials discussed bilateral cooperation and public health challenges, especially combating tobacco use. In addition, they touched on topics of global health, including the push to eradicate polio globally and the development of targets for addressing non-communicable diseases, both of which will be on the agenda for the 2012 World Health Assembly.

Dr. Onishchenko also traveled to CDC to discuss specific collaborative work under the POI with CDC experts and to visit the CDC’s Emergency Operations Center.
