American Pianist Joyce Yang Wows Audience with Rachmaninoff

On Monday, February 20th, American pianist Joyce Yang performed at Tchaikovsky Hall with the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Embassy’s “American Seasons” cultural program. The concert was truly an international evening of music, as Yang played alongside her Russian colleagues under the direction of visiting German conductor Ken-David Masur. All the night’s musicians had been brought together as part of Tchaikovsky Hall’s efforts to showcase the next generation of classical music stars. Yang wowed listeners with her virtuoso performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini,” which earned her numerous curtain calls from the rapt audience.

The name “American Seasons” is homage to Sergei Diaghilev and his efforts at the beginning of the last century to introduce Russian culture to Europe. Just as Diaghilev recruited the best Russian artists and musicians in order to show what was unique and exciting about Russian culture, we have been working to bring a broad spectrum of contemporary American artists to Russia to give audiences a taste of modern culture in the U.S. More information about the program is available at www.americanseasons.ru.
