Save Time – Renew Your Passport By Mail!

Q. What kind of passport services are available by mail?

A. The following passport services are available by mail:

  • Adult renewals
  • Adding visa pages
  • Replacing emergency passports
  • Obtaining a second fee passport
  • Changing your legal name in your passport

Q. Can anyone renew a passport by mail?

A. You can renew your passport by mail if you can answer “Yes” to all of the following questions:

  • Was your U.S. passport issued within the last 15 years?
  • Were you at least 16 years old at the time your most recent U.S. passport was issued?
  • Do you have your current passport in your possession AND can you submit it with your application?
  • Do you use the same name as on your most recent U.S. passport OR have you changed your name and can submit legal documentation to show this change?
  • Can you allow approximately 1-2 weeks processing time for your passport renewal?

Q. What if I just renewed my passport and there’s a mistake in it? Do I have to come in?

A. If your most recent U.S. passport was issued less than one year ago and you are only requesting a correction of a mistake in your passport or are changing your name (and can submit legal documentation to show this change) then you may apply for a correction by mail.

Q. I don’t meet any of the conditions above. Do I have to appear in person?

A. Yes. You will need to schedule an appointment, which you can do by following this link. Here is information on how to apply.

Q. I don’t belong to either of those groups. Where do I renew my passport?

A. If you don’t fall into either group, you should make an appointment at the Embassy by following this link. The Embassy is located at 21 Novinsky Bulvar in Moscow.

How to Renew Your Passport by Mail

Q. What do I need to send if I’m renewing by mail?

A. You’ll need to send in:

  • Form: One completed DS-82 Form for passport renewals, or form DS 4085. Please be sure to fill out all fields on the form. Incomplete forms will be returned to the sender.
  • Photos: One passport sized photo (5cm x 5cm)
    • The photo must be in color and on a white background with a matte finish.
    • You must face forward with your full face, including both ears, visible
    • Hats or other headwear are not permissible (exceptions are made for religious headdresses)
  • Passport: You must enclose your most recent U.S. passport
  • Payment: $110.00 for passport renewals, $82 for adding pages. Enclose this credit card authorization form.

    Unfortunately, we cannot accept payment by personal check or cash.

Q. How do I mail my passport renewal packet (domestically)?

A. Take your completed application and materials to any express-mail service like Pony Express www.ponyexpress.ru, or DHL www.DHL.ru, or TNT www.tnt.ru, etc.  and ask that the package be sent to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow with a prepaid delivery at the following address:

The Embassy will arrange for the return delivery and you will pay the return delivery fee at the first visit to the mail company or upon receipt depending on the courier’s regulations.  

Q. How long will it take to get my new passport if I mail it in?

A. You should get your new passport in one to two week’s time.

NOTE: DO NOT send your application package to the U.S. address listed on the application DS-82 Form.
