Ambassador Burns Visits Tver

April 20, 2007

On April 20, Ambassador William J. Burns traveled to Tver Oblast. He met with Governor Dmitriy Zelenin and discussed Tver’s regional economy, future development plans, American business investments in the Oblast, and ways to foster greater ties between the United States and the agricultural and industrial regions of central Russia.

While in Tver, Ambassador Burns visited the InterContact language school where many United States Government employees study the Russian language for periods ranging from two weeks to three months. The Ambassador thanked the school and the community for being such warm and welcoming hosts to the students and commended the excellent teachers of the Russian language at InterContact as being Ambassadors of Russian culture. Ambassador Burns also spoke with students and faculty at Tver State University and noted the 200th Anniversary of U.S. – Russia diplomatic relations and congratulated students on their educational accomplishments, noting that they will play a critical role in Russia's future.

On a tour of a dairy farm near Dmitrov, which previously received financial assistance from the Russian Credit Cooperative Development Fund (RCCDF) with the support of commodity donations from the United States, the Ambassador discussed opportunities for U.S. agricultural investment in the region and the important role of agricultural credit cooperatives in promoting greater economic development in rural areas.
