Ambassador Burns Visits Novaya Gazeta and Conveys Condolences to the Colleagues of Murdered Journalist Anna Politkovskaya

The U.S. Ambassador to Russia William J. Burns visited Novaya Gazeta's offices today and conveyed his sympathy and the condolences of the American people to Editor-in-Chief Dmitriy Muratov and the friends and colleagues of Anna Politkovskaya, a very brave journalist and defender of human rights who was brutally murdered on Saturday, October 7.
Ambassador Burns emphasized in a statement at the newspaper's offices that "like many Russians, Americans were shocked and saddened by this crime, and on behalf of the United States, I've come to Novaya Gazeta to convey our deepest sympathy. We have urged the Russian authorities to investigate this crime fully and punish those responsible. It is crucially important to protect all journalists."
