"Changing New York" –
A Photo Exhibit of Berenice Abbott
Location: Moscow House of Photography
Dates: May 18 - June 18, 2004
On May 18, the work of the American Photographer Berenice Abbott, which documents the memorable changing face of New York, from 1935-1939, opened at the Moscow House of Photography. It was one of the most ambitious projects in the history of photography, financed in accordance with the American Federal Program of Art and supported by the Museum of the City of New York. Systematically photographing streets and squares, houses and shops, Abbott followed the example of Eugene Atget, reflecting in thousands of photographs Paris at the turn of the century. In 1939 in connection with the opening of the New York world exhibition, the book "Changing New York" was published, which included 97 photographs of Abbott. Today the photo album serves as an example of documentary photography.
