Jazz Masters from New York Played a Concert at Arkhangelskoe Estate

Location: Moscow
Date: June 25, 2005

The first concert of the new open-air "Jazz Weekend" series took place on June 25 at Arkhangelskoe Estate. The concert presented "Cyrus Chestnut — Nikolay Panov Alliance/Territory of Rhythm" from the United States, whose members included Cyrus Chestnut (piano), Nikolay Panov (saxophone), Neil Smith (drums), and Michael Hawkins (bass). Expansive, lyrical and extremely sincere, Cyrus Chestnut is often called one of the leading jazz pianists of the current generation. Nikolay Panov, whom critics have called one of the best European tenor saxophonists of the 1990's, spent more than five years in the United States mastering the styles of southern blues. The quartet's latest project features gospel and blues, powerful swing, intricate afro-cuban rhythms, heartfelt melodies and virtuoso performances. The show's rhythms glide from the natural power and simplicity of earlier jazz through a short "encyclopedia" of classical piano jazz to the melodious modern lyricism of Chestnut's and Panov's own works. The group's take on Latin and funk rhythms represents the interpretation by the latest generation of New York musicians.
