"Only Classical in Jazz:" Unique American Pianist-Improviser Uri Caine Debuted in Russia

Location: Moscow
Date: December 02, 2004

On December 2 in the Tchaikovskiy Concert Hall, extraordinary jazz pianist and composer Uri Caine performed jazz improvisations on the theme of classical works as part of his European tour. Caine literally uses all music styles: jazz, classical, electronic, ethnic and religious music are combined in his improvisations. At his peak, he manifested himself as an interpreter of classical music. Born in Philadelphia, Uri Caine from the end of the 1980's established himself in New York, where he participated in innovating projects connected with jazz, played and recorded with Don Byron, David Douglas, John Zorn. The first discs he dedicated to great jazz pianists Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock. These works of Wagner, Maler, Schuman, Bach and Beethoven made the pianist famous. Today, Uri Caine is in demand throughout the world. His manner his often compared to Herbie Hancock: both are notably sharp and distinct in design of a combination of lush and saturated sound; both actively use electronic keyboards and, as life-time jazz musicians are quite inclined to depart the boundaries of jazz format.
